Ways to Quit Smoking

Before Quitting

Most people agree it is not easy to stop smoking. However, with some planning and commitment, you can make stopping smoking easier on yourself.

Make a note of why you want to quit, whether it is wanting to have more control over your life, to reducing health risk, or wanting to save money. You need to be really sure why you want to stop, and hold that thought in your head.

Think about why you're smoking each cigarette. What made you want to light up? - How are you going to combat those smoking trigger-points in the early days of being a non-smoker?

Quitting

What is the best way to stop smoking. Essentially there are three ways of stopping smoking.
  1. Going "Cold Turkey"; or
  2. Cutting Down; or
  3. Using Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)

Nicotine is a very addictive drug, and when stopping most smokers experience some feelings of withdrawal.

Using a NRT product will ease the nicotine withdrawal symptoms, however you still require willpower, as you will most likely still feel pangs to smoke.

You just have to accept the withdrawal symptoms for what they are, they're fine, it's just your body getting rid of the dependancy. As a smoker you go through your whole life experiancing nicotine withdrawal until you ave that next cigarette. Accept that by not smoking, those pangs will get weaker and weaker - and soon you'll be going days and months without even thinking about smoking.

It's very much a personal choice whether to try and cut down first, or go cold turkey, or use a NRT product - based on your smoking habit and any previous attempts you may have made to quit smoking.
